If you were not among us, have no fear, just sit back and imagine what could have been.
The night warmed up with an aura of déjà vu as I was brought back to my high school jazz days. The band stretched out with Sonny Rollins’ Doxy and perked the crowd to a mood, eager for more, but it was merely a tease. Not yet. With a sudden twist of routine, they sunk into a cavernous rendition of Mingus’ Goodbye Pork Pie Hat. I found myself thrust into a mysterious presence, with only the sultry swoons of the tenor sax to keep me company. It glued me to the chair, eyes shut, ears open, with the kind of current that brings your every hair to life. After that, what more could there be?
Off to the work of Monk they spun with Well You Needn’t, a cunning rendition; followed by an entourage of Shiny Stockings, Hot House and How Sweet It Is, educating the audience in how to show it off like Foster, heat it up with Dameron and sugar-coat it for Nestico, all in a Monday Night. The cherry, was chosen wisely. With their most sincere intentions of stimulating, arousing and pleasing, the group began their long farewell of Con Alma by the unparalleled Dizzy Gillespie. It was a ripe choice of bebop and made a perfect closer, raising the senses of the audience and scheduling their next December 6th. Where will you be?

This was actually a concert report I was required to do for Music 6, but I figure this is a music blog, so why not.
Mad props to Mike Dunn for killin it on Goodbye Pork Pie Hat.
peace

Back from the future

For those of you well cultured listeners who have ventured into the sound of Bela Fleck and his fabulous Flecktones, high-five, for those of you who haven't, WHAT THE HELL IS YOUR PROBLEM! I can understand that there is plenty of music out there that just isn't for everyone, but these guys should be enjoyed by every soul at least once in a while. Their ability to play some of the sickest rhythms and time-signatures, then break into separate solos or jams and some how bring it back around for a finale of the original tune, is just unfathomable.

I highly recommend that when listening to these guys, try and focus on a particular melody line or instrument, most of the way through the song, just to hear all of the incredible little things they do. These guys are just incredible musicians and when you put them all together, its like nothing else. First off Bela is a sensei on the banjo and with a bass revolutionary like Victor Wooten, it is impossible for them to do anything but rock the crap out of every tune they play. Definitely check out Stomping Ground on the Live Art album. It is one of my favorite tunes and a great example of just how tight these guys are.

I have been enjoying their stuff intensely for the past year or so, and I actually caught Bela with his Acoustic Trio and the Del McCoury band this summer in Northampton, MA. It was a great show aside from the fact it was in a seated venue and there was no room to bust out, but it was still a hell of a night. I highly recommend trying to catch Bela with the Flecktones at some point, or even just Bela if possible, if you dig the banjo and someone who can seriously rock it, you won't be dissappointed.

With the formalities out of the way, the real subject of my post is about one particular member of the group, Roy "Futureman" Wooten, also known as Futch. He is responsible for providing the funked out percussion and drumwork for the group. Until recently I was just assuming he did hand precussion and drumset, which was blowing my mind listening to some of the synocpations and patterns he cranked out with such accuracy and ease. So I did a little research, and in fact he uses a home-made electronic device known as the Synthaxe Drumitar.

It is basically a combination of velocity sensitive triggers in the form of a little guitar. It is plugged into a collection of samplers and can be programmed to litteraly any sound or a blend of different sounds on one trigger. So all the audience sees is Futch tapping away on this little device hanging from his neck, while hearing these crazy beats and solos, that sound just like a drumset! Very trippy. This is a really advanced electronic instrument that is a true technological breakthough. Sometimes Futch also uses a similar, publicly marketed device, the Zen Drum.

Check out the Flecktones and Futch's crazy Drumitar. Crazy shit, it will blow your mind.
Peace

Unbe-freakin-leavable

So what happens when the best band in the world makes a come back. i dont know yet but it looks like 2006 may be the year we find out. Had repeated all-nighters lately? Still feeling wiped and completely hopeless over the mountain of things on your plate? Then try this.

A new pain reliever, if you will, but there is one catch...
You must willingly take the jump from guitar to sitar.

Her name is Anouska Shankar, daughter of the Ravi Shankar. For those of you thinking about 9/11, grow up, they aren't all like that. Her father was in fact a well-known composer and sitar virtuoso. He started teaching Anoushka at 9 and at 13 she made her debut New Delhi, India. Her family was close friends with George and Olivia Harrison, and Anouska did conducting with her father and George on an album. She played at Carnegie Hall in 2001 and the show recording was nominated for Best World Music Album. Since then, she has continued to realease more and more solo albums. She just released a new one in September and is now selling out large venues, all over the globe.

If you need something new and really chill, put this on at the end of a long night, or while studying, it's great for reading. The Armory is a recently refurbished venue that was shut down for a while and recently just reopened. I left Burlington at 3 in the afternoon hoping to get in early and meet Phil. My friend had some kind of meet and greet ticket so he got in and met him. The doors opened at 7:30, the show began a little after 8:30.To my surprise and delight the tickets I got from my sister were box seats, My friends and I had our own little private box.

Phil and Phriends, a band that is constantly changing line ups featured Chris Robinson (vocals) Phil Lesh (bass) John Moto (drums) John Scofield (guitar) Mookie Siegel (keys) and, Barry Sless (Steel Pedal.) The place was out of control, very little security allowed for tons of crazy shit to go down. Smoking was a given, it seemed like everyone in the venue was lighting up, cigs and joints. The first set opened with "Just Another Whistle Stop" a nice bluesy opener. The first song set the tone for the rest of the night, very bluesy. Highlights were "Friend of the Devil," "Eyes of the World," "I Know you Rider," "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away"(Beatles), and my favorite of the night "All Along the Watchtower" (Hendrix)

John Scofield, known for his jazz guitar playing, has played with greats like Miles Davis and MMW. I knew that this show would be something special because Scofield has such an original style, and is so good that he makes whoever he is playing with that much better. He wasnt overbearing and let the band flow as Phils band always does, but when it was time for him to take a solo, he didnt hold back. I think he is one of the best ever, and the fact that he can play with Miles Davis, put out several jazz albums, and then play Jerry's part for Phil and Friends shows how talented he is. We are quite unfortunate to have very few good shows scattered throughout the fifty states, however, we have truly been blessed with the performances available in the Big Apple for '05/'06. For those that love the electronic beats and trancey sounds flowing from the amplifiers, I would suggest going to see The New Deal (B.B. King Blues Club), Infected Mushroom (Spirit), The Disco Biscuits (Hammerstein Ballroom), or Brothers Past (Bowery Ballroom). Some other great jam bands to check out if you are in NYC for the dropping of the ball, are Gov't Mule (Beacon Theater), North Mississippi Allstars (Madison Square Garden), U Melt (Coda) and Toubab Krewe (The Blue Note). The cool thing is, is that most of these shows are set up so that you can attend one after another and not miss a slobbering, drunken, New Year's beat. Cheers.

Tell us what you want.

Lately, around campus I've been hearing much jibber-jabber about the up and coming springfest '06. Honestly, in my eyes, the lineup does not look extremely appealing and seems to be in need of a bit of fine tuning. Perhaps with the help of some devoted music fans we can get our foot in the door to change things. As far as posted (on a UVM survey) the contestants began as follows:
Beck
Weezer
Guster
Ben Harper
Modest Mouse
Trey Anastasio
Black Eyed Peas
Counting Crowes
Gov't Mule
The Killers
Ween
Jack Johnson
Kanye West
OAR
Tenacious D

However, currently it seems as though that list has been narrowed down to:
Tenacious D
Trey Anastasio
Kanye West
...aaand a couple others that I cannot even remember at this time.
Anyways, we have had great performers like Keller Williams, String Cheese Incident and Particle in past years and I feel that this year should be just as awesome. So what do you guys think? Please comment and post on who you would like to see at this year's Springfest '06.

Roku for You

I'd like to take this opportunity to make those who aren't aware, a bit farmiliar with a new Burlington based group that is on the rise. Roku. They are a unique eight piece jazz band with an individual style with a personal friend of mine, Dan Ryan, on drums, and Russ Flynn on bass, Justin Monsen playing guitar and Ari Daiconis with percussion. The band's tight driving rhythm selection is comprised of Alex Wolston's trumpet and fugelhorn, Sean Feely and Christopher Diasparra on the sax, and the most current addition of Andrew Mallon on the vibraphone. Audience members have been seen "grooving on the edges of their seats" at Roku shows and if you are in fact so lucky, you could be one of them too. Roku is playing at Nectar's Bar on the 7th of this month at 9:30 in support of Dave Grippo. You should check out the new site. It is packed with all kinds of goodies. There is a link to stream live video clips, links to their music archive that can be downloaded onto iTunes, and even a spot for you to post pictures and comments. Not only that, but there is also a place to post reviews of shows! The best feature by far, however, is the open archive vault which features historical background of the given year, events, photos, music, shows, art, and news. It’s simply wonderful. So, have yourself a hightime and check this out!

Greyspoke Variety Update

Updating again on Greyspoke Variety... So, as of late the band has been playing around Burlington and in Potsdam, New York. You may have been lucky enough to catch them playing on a Sunday night at Nectar’s "Open Band Night", which they have made three appearances at. If you are cool enough, you probably saw them jamming out at a local house party on North Union. Perhaps you are a sneaky one, or just in the right place at the right time, for once, and have heard some bad-ass rhythms pumping out of the basement of Slade Hall. Yes, that was Greyspoke Variety. Let it also be noted that they have been practicing in the Living/Learning Complex on the UVM campus. If you are the long-distance kind, or maybe even a SUNY Potsdam student, you most likely have heard about this band rocking out and making the party at the "7 1/2" house. For those of you who have no clue what I am talking about, I HIGHLY recommend Greyspoke Variety. They have recently added a show to Archive.org. Go now before you forget, http://www.archive.org/... and check them out. But let it be known, a forewarning, Greyspoke Variety may just melt your face.

Billboard top 100 a useful resource?

Ever been to Billboard.com? If not surely you have heard of the Billboard charts, they rank the top selling albums overall and in most musical categories(country, rock, pop, etc..) This week I visited the Billboard website and not to my surprise I found the first 5 albums on the top 100 were all hip-hop albums.
On a side note..Sorry if I offend anyone but why is rap considered music? Sure it has a beat, and reptitive sound effects, and someone spiting words out at lightening speed but isn't this more like advanced poetry? Not that there is anything wrong with Hip-Hop or Rap. The 3 B's, Bling, bitches and blunts are great I'm not denining that, Im also a fan of a good rhyme Mother Goose is a favorite of mine(see?),the mainstream genre just seems all to repetitive. Mos Def, The Roots, even Kanye West I can dig on, they have a message but still this gets all to old.
But back to the Billboard...Chris Brown (r&b artist not a rapper)at number one for the the third week in a row!! Wow! Well, I've never heard of Chris Brown and I'm sure he has the voice of an angel but for some reason I'm not interested in hearing his music. Sorry Chris but number 1 for 3 weeks in a row doesn't indicate to me that you are anything special. You share the honor of a number 1 selling album in the U.S. along with other greats such as N'Sync, The Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears... the list could go on significantly longer...
I didnt sample any of Chris's music but I looked up his lyrics and I must say they seem like typical shitty girl I wanna do you lyrics, here are some from his title track "Run It" off his number 1 album featuring Julez Santana

" You'll see
Girl I can set you off
Don't believe my age is gonna slow us down
I can definitly show you things
that's gon have you sayin I can't be 16
Once I get in you won't wanna go
(and I...)
I'll have yo girls wishin they were you
(and I...)
I know your heard about me, but guess what's goin down if we leave"

Pretty sophisticated if you ask me... here's more

" I got friends, and you got friends
They hop out, and you hop in
I look fly, and they jockin
The way you drop, drop makes me hot, hot"

^Now thats just silly, and what the fuck is "jockin"?

How can it be?? how can this be the number 1 album in America? Honestly I dont know, but it makes me sad. To the peolpe who bought and listen to this album I hope you enjoy it, and I'm sure that its amazing.. after all it is Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Billboard

'Tis the Season

On a more festive note, Christmas and Hanukkah will soon be here and that means that you probably have some shopping to do. In the spirit of giving, I have found some really cool CDs that might help you decide what to get for the people on your list. There are a lot of benefit CDs out there, especially with all of the disasters that seem to be infecting the Earth these days. It is a good idea to remember the hurricane victims who most likely will not be able to share in their regular holiday traditions this year due to these unfortunate events. Therefore, I have found two, in particular, that might just be the thing you are looking for- a gift that keeps giving.

Nugs.net has joined together with many generous artists including the Benevento/ Russo Duo with Mike Gordon, David Grisman Quintet, Galactic, and others to bring you Union Justice & Confidence: A nugs.net Benefit Album for New Orleans Musicians. All profits (100%!!) will proceed from nugs.net and the various artists to help support relief organizations like Tipitina’s Foundation, New Orleans Musicians Hurricane Relief Fund, New Orleans Musician’s Clinic, and Conscious Alliance. Musicians Assisting Disaster Efforts: A Conscious Alliance of Voices, Vol. 1. This CD features tracks from Umphrey’s McGee, the Gourds, Yonder Mountain String Band, plus many others as well. Again for the second time, Conscious Alliance has generously teamed up with the band the Deep Fried Pickle Project to bring you this CD which will help assist the victims of Hurricane Katrina and Rita. The funds will be donated to those that are in need of food, baby formula, baby supplies, toys, and other necessities. "How to Disappear Completely" written by Bret Gladstone for The Associated Press, includes direct comments taken from an interview with Trey Anastasio. Read it for yourself, please, http://burlingtonfreepress.com.... But, for now, all that I am able to offer are my own thoughts.
First off, I find Anastasio to be generally honest with his audience. He offers answers to some of the whys that have left me bitter since that sad night on August 15th summer of ‘04.
Some of the points I find most poignant include Anastasio’s comments about our, the fans, reactions towards the breakup. For instance, he speaks about our lack of receptiveness towards the feelings with which he had been dealing with for some time now. He says, "I’ve kind of built my life around having an outlet with the audience, and what’s particularly interesting is this, the audience that I’m so used to having as my emotional outlet was, you know, not so thrilled about all this. So that made it hard for everybody." This is understandable, for me at least, because he is right. I have been feeling apathetic towards him. After all, this is not what I want- I want Phish back. But, obviously, it is not about me... I guess after reading that comment I feel guilty, in a sense, and relieved, as well, that he is aware of my feelings. I feel a sense of guilt because I feel bad for the guy. He is just a regular dude behind that Cheshire grin. But after 20 years, and over 20 billion instants in which the band and the fans have connected in an almost celestial way, it is hard to imagine the four of them as anything less than prophetic.
Which leads into my next point concerning Anastasio’s biblical comparison. He is speaking about his newly released track ‘Invisible’, which he says is directly related to Coventry. The lyric that he refers to specifically is ‘walking on wood, sinking in water’. He mentions the awful sea of plywood that caused me surf through mud and wood rather than just coast along. Nonetheless, he says, "There was mud all over the place and everywhere that the four of us walked they laid down sheets of plywood so we didn’t have to walk on the mud... We were walking on water for 20 years. To some degree. In some people’s eyes. And that’s the oddity, cause nobody does that... sometimes sinking is the best thing that can happen". Here he makes a direct link between the holiness of Jesus and the omniscient band. Now, more than ever, I am able to relate to the pressure and anxiety that they have had to live and perform under. Being compared to God is not something that any regular dude (no matter what he is on) is ready for, and naturally so. With this, I have a better understanding of where he is at . He allows me to empathize with his concerns and doubts of living up to such extensive expectations.
Although, what really strikes a cord (no pun intended) is Anastasio’s confessional comments about the essential reasons as to why Phish suddenly floated away on that velvet sea for ever more. He says, quite mater-of-factly, that it was the drug scene that enveloped the band for however long. He says, "it did get very crazy... Everybody I knew- it was pretty much what people were doing the last four years,". Later, he mentions the hiatus which had many on high alert and says, "we tried to take the hiatus– didn’t do anything,". And then, he brings up the big factor: Coventry. For those that made it to this emotional finale, it was clearly evident that the band was very fucked up. By that I mean, there were times when the band played entire songs out of key, forgot the lyrics, or simply neglected to sing them. I, for one, did not really care. If I were them I might do the same thing– just to get by. Nevertheless, he bluntly states: we had 3,000 people on the guest list at Coventry, that’s how big the backstage was... We had oceans of hangers-on, and it was completely out of control, meanwhile the music was getting worse and worse as far as I’m concerned. The funny things about Coventry itself was that it was just like, All right, you want to see why this is ending? This is it, sort of.
And with that, all I can say is that it is sad to see such talent so far gone. Whether I believe all that he has said to be true is something of a different matter. Regardless of that, this article has taught me a lot about Trey as a human being. Oftentimes, it easy to take others for granted, especially those that give us what we need until the wee hours of the night. And it is important, for me at least, to be respectful and maybe a little more understanding of these four guys because, after all, they were just some college kids in Vermont trying to play music at one point in time...
Take care and remember, please me, have no regrets...

Thanksjamming!

Welcome back all you jive turkeys,
Hope the holiday break was enjoyable and mmmm, mmmmm, good! No where else in the world has the guitar been more influential, except maybe England. As time progresses new styles develop, some have tried to build upon what the greats like Hendrix and Clapton did. Others have tried to reverse the idea of musicianship and rebel like the punk periods The Clash for example. Recently there has been a new trend in guitar playing, Looping.
         <~~Keller
Looping is when a guitar player lays down either a chord progression or some kind of bass run on a Looping Station, this is a fairly complicated pedal that allows the guitarist to record a progression and keep recording on top of each layer. It is quite amazing, some really cool stuff can be done if it is used right. One problem I tend to have is getting the timing right, you have to play with them for a while to figure them out. Some guys really have them down though. The number one example has to be Keller Williams- the one man band. If you havent seen this guy it really is a treat for the eyes and ears. Keller will be at Higher Ground on December 10th, 20 bucks in advance, 22 day of show. More guys are getting into the Looping thing, Howie Day is another big name. Howie has more of a "pop" sound, but proves to be talented none the less.
                 <~~Howie
If you are a guitarist and interested in the Loop, there are many different options available. The Boomerang is a quality pedal, Line 6 makes a really nice Loop pedal, Boss also makes a nice looping station. I am most familiar with the Boss, it can't do nearly as much as the other two but its still quality.

Vorcza Trio

What is REALLY good? It's been a while.. but the blogging must go on. This post is for all you funky-ass jazz cats. Anyone a fan of Medeski, Martin and Wood? How about Soulive? Jacob-Fred Jazz Oddessy? Phish? Thelonious Monk? Bill Evans? If you are into any of these bands you will love Vorzca. Vorcza is a kick ass jazz trio featuring Ray Paczkowski(keys), Robinson Morse(bass), Gabriel Jarrett (drums and son of jazz legend Keith Jarrett.) These guys are seriously sick, incorporating so many different influences and styles into their ever-progressive take on jazz. Ray began touring with Trey Anastasio after Trey, impressed with his talent asked him to join his band.

Vorcza is playing at the Higher Ground Showcase Lounge on Friday, December 9th. It is a CD release party for the bands second album Corner of the Morning. The show will also benefit COTS Burlington's own Committe On Temporary Shelter, special guests are rumored, this show should not be missed! It's an oppourtunity to support a good cause, support local music and see a mind-blowing show.

Christmas Jam...

Christmas time is a time for celebration, giving and recieving and music of course. This year Warren Haynes gets us all in the christmas spirit with his 17th annual Christmas Jam. All proceeds for the show go to Habitat for Humanity, a non-profit organization that builds houses for those without shelter. Not only is this a great cause, its going to be a rockin' show. Announced guests thus far are as follows. Trey Anastasio and Mike Gordon, Hot Tuna Electric, Ray Lamontagne, John Scofield, Gov't Mule, John Medeski and many others. The show is at the Asheville Civic Center in North Carolina, quite a trip but well worth it.

On another subject.. Phil Lesh and Friends have been awesome this past tour. I urge you all to take a listen. Chris Robinson from The Black Crows on vocals. And joining for 2 shows due to Jimmy Herring leaving the band and replacement Larry Campbell being unavailable will be the legendary world class guitarist John Scofield! Both shows are in New York the second on Sunday December 4th in Albany only 3 hours away from Burlington, This show will be amazing. Dont miss it.

New Years Madness!!!

Thats right friends and readers, the new year is almost upon us. What does that mean you might ask? New Years Runs you idiot, some of the most unpridictable and amazing music of an entire year often happens in a weeks time. So whats goin on this year K-Theory? You wanna know the dilly-o do you sonny? Ok well sit back and relax cause here it comes.
Down in the dirty south Electro-organic-fusion masters STS9 make their way to the tabernacle in Atlanta for a three night run culminating in NYE festivities. Not far away Jam survivors Widespread Panic Will cap off their muscial year with two nights at Atlantas Philips Arena. Elsewhere Chicagos pride and joy, Umphree's Mcgee end their year with what always promises to be exciting, unpredictible, and rockin as hell as they perform two nights at Chi Town's Argon Ballroom along with long time dead head and new Umphriend Keller Williams (also performing with Umph at last years Amster-jam and this past summers Big Summer Classic Tour). The newly crowned "Deadliest scene in the world" heads out to San Fran for new years as the String Cheese Incident takes its veggie burritos and Hepatits C to the Concouurse Exhibition Center for two nights of their unstopable NYE party (all shots at SCI in jest). Well if your talking about NYE and Jam Bands i better metion moe. right, right! Headed out of the classic go where the big crowd is mentallity the boys head down south to Ashville NC for a three night run starting with one night at the renowned Orange Peel, follwed by two nights at the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium.
But honestly i could go on for hours, if you want to know what to really do on NYE look no further than the home of that big stinking ball it self, NYC. Thats right folks the big apple. And whose in town, lets see. Oh surpise surprise Mr. Warren Haynes and his own band, Gov't Mule are sitting pretty at the Legendary Beacon Theater for three nights. Smack dab on top of New Yorks own Penn Station The Black Crowes, My Morning Jacket, and North Missippi Allstars look to rock MSG to its very foundation on NYE. But on that very same night my very own personal heros take the stage not more than a Derek Jeter linedrive distance away. Capping a four night run starting with two nights at Upper Darby, PA's Tower Theater and ending with a pair of shows at the Hammerstein Ballroom The Disco (Fuckin) Biscuits will be melting faces walls and ceilings all over NYC's Face with the first ever extended run with their new drummer (Whos identity is to be announced before Thanksgiving).
One show in NYC on NYe not enough for you? Me either! Starting at 1:30 AM Canadian Kings of House, The New Deal, Take the stage for a two setter at B.B. Kings Bar and Grill, spitting distace from time square. but honestly 1:30 i'd have to leave the Biscuits. Lucky for me Philly's other Livetronic powerhouse, Brothers Past, has scheduled a show for that very same morning starting an hour later at the Bowery Ballroom WAYYYYYYY downtown. That means i get to see two of my favorite touring bands all in one night, God i love NYE.
------->WARNING<-------
THIS NEXT SECTION IS ONLY FOR THE HARDEST OF HARDCORE PARTIERS
IF YOU STILL HAVE IT IN YOU "INFECTED MUSHROOM" STARTS AT 6 AM YES 6 AM AT NYC'S CLUB SPIRIT. THIS WILL BE NUTS AND PROBABLLY A LOT OF SPUN AND CRACKED OUT KIDS WILL BE THERE, BUT THESE GUYS KICK ASS. DANK NASTY TRANCY SHIZNIT.

That all being said you can find out more about whats goin on in your area on NYE by going to Jambase in our links and searching your own area.

Peace and Love and an Early Happy Healthy to all
K-Theory

Jazz Cravings.

For all you heads who enjoy a good show thats funky as hell, jazzy and jammy, I highly recommend checking out Soulive on Thursday, November 10th at the Higher Ground Ballroom. I make it a must to get to their shows whenever they are in the area because they simply tear it up non-stop for a good few hours and have proven to help ANYONE dance their worries away. Soulive is a compilation of brothers Alan and Neal Evans on drums while Hammond plays the organ and Eric Krasno on guitar. The band was born in the early 90's when each member was barely 25 years old, possessing substantial backgrounds in the jam band scene. Alan and Neal were once members of Moon Boot Lover and Alan has also played with the much loved group, Greyboy Allstars. Krasno helped to create the funky ass band known as Lettuce in Boston. Dope Soulive albums to check out are as follows: Get Down, Turn it out and Doin' Something featuring the sexy and talented, John Scofield. I made it to the Soulive show last winter at The good ol' HG and it was amazing- a funky show with a high energy type of crowd. I also saw them last winter at Johnson State College at the school theater and they definitely tore it up at that show, as well. So check it out on Thursday, fifteen bucks if you get on top if it now, and seventeen night of show.

Keep listenin
& Enjoi
StribeChicks9

Halloween Comes Early to Woostahhh

This year brothers Past decided (for reasons outside my knowledge) to not play a show on halloween. Instead the boys took their never ending roadshow to The Grind at Clark University. Arriving way early to the show i watched the boys soundcheck for a little bit and then headed out into the chilly october night to find where the party was at before the show. After chilling in a random room in a random dorm for quite some time i started to get the vibe that no one knew about or was even slightly interested in this show. I mean i talked to a bunch of costumed people (specifically 2 scotish exchange kids dressed in full braveheart garb, RIGHT ON!) and not a one of them had even heard of the show. Even after me telling them it was free most of them seemed more interested in the drag show that was about to take place elsewhere on campus.
So off the the show and...THERE IS NO ONE THERE!! literally no more than 45 people could have showed up for this gig. But BP couldn't have cared less playing a rockin show. Highlights include a new song, Anvil, and the return of tom Mckey's Night Villians. The energy of the first set exploded in the set closing Simple Gift of Man>What's on Your Mind>Simple Gift of Man sandwhich featuring a dark industrial plunge back into the end of Simple gift of Man. The second set also provided some sick moments. Noteable where the Jam out of Big Blue Apples into Bottlecap(the jam faded after this point sadly as BBA is one of the best BP songs in my opinion) and the amazing jam out of Forget you Know me into the end of Boy.
It was really amazing to get to see BP with so few people in attendance (Although some of those drag queens showed up for the second set) and they didnt play a half bad show either. All in all a good show B.

Stay up
K-Theory

HAPPY HALLOWEEN

Trick or treat?
Happy Halloween everyone. This is a day for dressing up, getting wasted and or taking your psychedelic drug of choice, for music fans its about doing all that and going to an awesome concert. Now even though I didn't attend any of the following shows they are worth checking out on mp3, CD or whatever you like.

In the mid 1990s Phish, the super jamband(local to Burlington) did a series of Halloween shows that were no ordinary shows. The concept was called a musical costume. Phish would play two sets of original music and then in between these sets cover an entire album by an influential band from start to finish. Starting in 1994, Phish covered "The White Album" by The Beetles, 95- "Quadrophenia" by The Who, 96- "Remain in Light" by the Talking Heads, 98- "Loaded" by the Velvet Underground. Amazing stuff, and what's more is the quality of each show. Phish really put a lot of time and effort into learning these albums note for note. They really do justice to each album as well, showing how talented these four guys really are. All of these shows are available on CD from the Live Phish series. They are: Live Phish 13, 14, 15 and 16. My personal favorite is 13, "the White Album" cover. Killer versions of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and "Rocky Raccoon." It was during what many consider to be their best year of touring, 1994. Even if you hate Phish these albums are worth checking out, and if you hate them now after listening you might change your mind.

Conspirator Headlines at the Bowery, A.K.A. Conspirator is made up of Marc Brownstein (bass) and Aron Magner (keys) of the Disco Biscuits and long time Biscuits collaborator DJ Omen. The bands intense blend of Omens relentless Drum N Bass, the danceable key riffs of Magner, and floor shaking bass of Brownstein provides creates an amazing danceable and outright DIRTY sound that is blowing minds. Conspirator took the stage at around midnight and dropped right into the dark beats we had all come for. Within minutes the band was joined by the drummer and keyboard player of young stars Pnuma for an extended 3 song segment. During all this Brownstein and Magner's Flying Circus buddy Scott Metzger (Rana) came on stage to add some guitar to the mix. After the long parade of friends we were finally treated to a good forty five minutes of pure Conspirator. After that the supposed highlight of the night had arrived when former biscuits drummer and current medschool student Sam Altman took a seat behind the kit. Unfortunately Sammy did not settle into the mix quite as well as the young drummer of Pnuma and was often lost in the sound or searching for a complementary beat to Omen's intense beats.
So was the show a disappointment? HELL NO! Conspirator rocked the house and we all danced our asses off. More importantly however at around 11 P.M., only an hour before Conspirator hit the stage I was blown away by a young trio out of Chicago. Calling themselves a mix of "Organic instruments + electronic synthesis + clever song writing" Future Rock, Mickey Kellerman (keys), Felix Moreno (bass), and Darren Heitz (drums), tore the Bowery a new one. With a set Featuring a cover of a song by the band Air and a bunch of original tunes Future Rock impressed almost anyone in the room. I personally recommend checking out their website at futurerock.net for more info, photos, and sample music clips.
All things together this was a great show at a really fun venue with excellent sound, A.

Stay up
K-Theory
P.S. CHECK OUT FUTURE ROCK.
(all photos courtesy of futurerock.net and jampics.com)

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://freeheady.blogspot.com/2005/10/conspirator-headlines-at-bowery-aka.html' title='Conspirator Headlines at the Bowery, A.K.A. I have seen them before, but their show at Bonnaroo was insane. Even though the night was turning into day, the vibes and colors were bouncing like no other. Everyone was tuned in and turned on- having fun. Perhaps it was the 3-D glasses I was wearing, but the energy that the band produced was fuel to the audience and it cycled like that through and through. If you want a release from school work or a means of re-charging your spirits, go see STS9 tonight at a Higher Ground. The show starts at 9 and tickets cost $20 at the door. You can order them online, too, at http://www.highergroundmusic.com/calendar/?show=331. Nugs.net is an awesome site to loose yourself in music. You download entire setlists from bands like MMW, Jazz Mandolin Project, and Vida Blue. The "stash", as they call it, is immence and packed with old and new material from over 30 bands. In addition to downloading, you can also stream Nugs.net Radio right onto your computer and listen to an already compliled mix- all with the click of the little mouse! Right now, I am streaming Nugs and Trey is rocking out to "Alive Again" from a 06/04/03 show in Chicago, Il. Streaming is great because it leaves the listener with nothing left to do but simply listen- and I like that. Not to mention, Nugs.net also has a nice-sized gallery of live photos to peruse. You can take a listen or a look for yourself. Go to http://www.nugs.net and have fun!

Eye Candy

If you went to the Gathering of the Vibes, Camp Creek, or All Good festival chances are you have probably witnessed the craziest light show out there- Optical Delusion. Optical Delusion provides high-end visual projections for concerts of all sizes and even for corporate conferences, as well. The combination of video creations, live feed, and oil projections enables Optical Delusion to create designs and colors like they have never been seen before. Digital technology enables for smooth and speedy transitions between images. Like the original light shows back in the day, the use of oil on a projector is continued though much more advanced. The psychedelic effects that the Grateful Dead and others like Jefferson Airplane were trying to administer during the Acid test shows of yesteryear come to a full head with the ingenuity of Optical Delusion.
You can check out pictures from previous shows and even click on thumbnail images on their website http://www.opticaldelusion.com/www.html. For the past two Sundays Greyspoke Variety has been testing out the waters here in Burlington at Nectar’s Open-Band Night. Even after their first go at it, the response was really positive and the band got great feedback from the audience. The good vibes brought them back for seconds following their initial (and successful) attempt to break down the doors of musical isolation. Although there is only about 15 minutes allotted to each band, last weekend Greyspoke still managed to get the crowd dancing in such a small time-span. Audience members were surprised with the band’s talent. One person even said, "keep it comin’ man!" as the band exited off stage. If you want to take a break or grab some heady fries on Sunday night, do yourself a favor and go to Nectar’s to see what I am mean. I’m telling you- Greyspoke Variety is sick.

All right, I assume we all have our lives figured out. Plans for the future are set. Progress is being made, and we are all merrily on our way. Uhh, right? Well, at least I know that I am not that sure about where or what I will be when I grow up (and does that even happen?). I have an idea of what I hope for the future, but I cannot be certain that all will go accordingly. To make myself feel better about my doubts and insecurities, I have formulated a few ideas of an "Alternate Plan-B", which in the end is really my ideal career. So, I have always dreamed of opening a coffee house that is both a fun place to eat something delicious, and is also a Mecca for community development via the arts. .
Located just a block down from Pearl St. Beverage and next to The O.P. at 8 N. Winooski Ave. lies Radiobean, the little wonderment. Radiobean is the perfect place for anyone. With it’s great location, and tables outside, it is the ideal spot to grab a fresh cup of coffee, or even a pot of yummy chai tea for two, and the zucchini bread is awesome! The atmosphere is funky and accepting. The urban aura lends itself to the cheetah-print booth, and stainless steel details. While, the dark wood and deep red walls are comforting and warm. Radiobean is a welcome change from the sterile, caustic coffee shop giants that seem to be taking over the nation.
Asides from it’s aesthetic appeal, Radiobean is a cool place to catch a glimpse of the local music world that exists underneath the shadow of the bigger venues like a Higher Ground. On Monday nights, Radiobean hosts an open-mike night beginning around 9 and ending after the last act. This is a key night if you want to hear a diverse range of local music- beatboxing, chants, or drum sessions, etc. If you are looking for a place to jam, however, the sign-up process can get a little aggressive as there are many people trying to do the same. The best bet is to go early, before 7. Monday open-mike is a great opportunity for both the artist and the admirers to relax in the comfort of the simple things- beer (yes, they have beer on tap, as well), rich coffee, herbal tea, tunes, and friendly faces. Go to http://www.radiobean.com for a monthly posting of the scheduled acts. We all know of and, have heard (I hope) the music of Jerry Garcia and his band The Grateful Dead. He is considered to be one of the most influential musicians ever. The Grateful Dead toured and wrote music from the mid 60s right up through 1995 when Jerry passed. Although the genuis behind the music was gone, that didnt mean the music itself had to be gone. Jerry's music touched so many people, and essentially created the genre of music we know as Jamband. The Grateful Dead opened the doors for so many musicians. One band I would like to talk about is Jazz is Dead.

They are pretty much a super group of amazing musicians. Jazz is Dead, is not a tribute band. Nor are they a cover band, however there repertoire is all Grateful Dead songs. What makes them different from a cover band you ask? Well, first off they don't sing. Anyone who knows the Grateful Dead knows they sing, a lot, they are good at it too. Jazz is Dead basically turns Grateful Dead songs into instrumentals. Not an easy task at all, they convert the vocal lines into either guitar or piano lines. They also throw a funk twist into the songs which is cool. Not to mention all these guys can play, the band features the great Jimmy Herring on guitar, a true technical master, Alphonso Johnson on bass playing some of the funkiest lines I've ever heard, T Lavitz on keys and Billy Cobham/Rod Morgestein on drums. Jimmy Herring is also notable for the Aquarium Rescue Unit and The Dead. Alphonso Johnson notable for the great jazz fusion band WeatherReport and Billy Cobham for The Mahavishnu Orchestra. A few albums definatly worth checking out by Jazz is Dead are "Blue Light Rain" and "Great Sky River" these feature stunning versions of "Dark Star", "China Cat Sunflower", "Red Baron"(personal favorite), "Estimated Prophet" and many more. Check out Jazz is Dead on album or some live recordings, unfortunatly they have disbanded so seeing them live is impossible but never the less, listen. "Records, you say? For musicians?" DAMN STRAIGHT! Here's a little story from the drumming community.

For decades, a man name Johnny Rabb has been playing drums like no other. (Yes, the goofy-lookin bastard pictured above.) He's got chops out the yin-yang and a personality to match. Known best for his jungle drumming and drum'n'bass work, Johnny is a master of all things syncopated and linear. He has released numerous books (I have worked out of one), DVDs and even invented his own stick, the RhythmSaw. He has put on numerous clinics across the country and has toured internationally with fellow drummers Marco Minnemann and Thomas Lang, both of whom are also incredibly gifted. Anyway, one year at a drum event in Nashville, TN with the help of a device called a "DRUMOMETER" that counts drum beats, he set the first ever record for World's Fastest Drummer, with 1,026 single strokes in 60 seconds!! That's right. Think of anytime you have tapped out a little rhythm on your desk, each hand making one beat. Now imagine doing over 1,000 of those in a freakin minute!!! That's just over 17 BEATS A SECOND!! Uncanny!!
As if this wasn't enough, he now had the attention of the Guinness Book, and in a live broadcast on VH1's 'Rock & Roll Record Breakers' he broke his own record and established the current with 1,071 single strokes in 60 seconds! If that is not amazing, I don't know what is.

For more info on Johnny or any of your favorite drummers,
be sure to check out DRUMMERWORLD.

I think I'll lay down for a while.
Peace.

Here's one for the band geeks

I'm always looking out for my own and just to prove that, here are some great resources for all you musicians (or anyone who needs them) out there. Is this part of the venue going to have dancing room? How's the security? all these questions swirl as i approach the new Nokia Theater in NYC for the first time. the scene outside seemed like any normal show in NYC, people outside getting in their last precious cigarettes, cops jostling kids out of the way in order to keep the sidewalks clear, some random chick with a case full of crystals?? oh yes did I forget to mention STS9 is in the house. And what a special night it would be.
With sporadic colaborator and amazing artist Oliver Vernon on stage right and world reknowned artist and painter Alex Grey on stage left the tribe was ready to assult the city with a multi-sensory explosion. Hot from the get go with "Once Told" the boys seemed to be holding back for the rest of the first set, never letting it get to explosive, keeping the music fairly tame. After an okay first set everyone was looking for the heat in the second set. No one left dissapointed. With an cool and melodic "Breathe In" and an explosive "Tokyo" the guys brought the heat. Noteable also was the show closing "Rilly Whut" for the intense sampling and orgasmic peak.
All in all the show was okay a solid C+/B-. The venue was also okay with LOOSE security and a cool room for the show iitself. the only venue drawbacks brand name everything, high $, and a long ass single file line to smoke at setbreak. I'd probably see a show hear again though C+.

Till next time
K-Theory
P.S. yeah the painting was fuckin sick also!!!
(all picures courtesy of alexgrey.com and oliververnon.com)

still got it

I am proud to say, Eric Clapton is still rockin out. Not that there were any doubts I'm hoping but I mean he is still dropping albums, and his newest release Back Home has a new kind of twist. I have only heard one of the songs, but it seems Clapton is trying many new things these days and that is exciting, because I mean, he's Eric Clapton, his shit rocks! So keep your eyes peeled for the new album in stores, and for now, rock out to his new, reggae-feel tune, 'Revolution'. One of the the most influential and talented musicians of the 20th century. He was a jazz guitarist who reigned in late 50s to late 60s, mid sixties highlighting his most praised material. This guy is straight up the best ever. He can play a sweet ballad like body and soul, and then fire through the most intense bebop. If you had to categorize his style of jazz you would call it hard-bop, hard unrelentless swing. My personal favorite Wes album is "Smokin' at the Half Note." This album really captures his diverse playing ability and his ever orginal style. I find Wes to be especially awesome because he is completely self-taught, never took a lesson in his life. A little too quiet around here (Albany, NY), however I did pay a visit to the Van Dyke, a local jazz club that has attracted such names as John Scofield, and many other big names in jazz. Tonight was a little different flavor however...blues. The act ... "The Matt Mirabile Band", just so happens to be an old friend of mine from grammar school, Matt and I played baseball and shit together we even had some jams, I couldnt keep up with him. He is a guitar prodigy no ifs ands or butts about it, and to indicate the kind of talent im talking about here, Matt played a Jimi Hendrix Medley for the 6th grade talent show! Who does that????

His band is a four person band featuring guitar, bass, drums and a lovely female vocalist, who had one hell of a voice. Playing a few covers only those who grew up listening to blues in the 50s would recognize, and a mostly all orginal set of straight up no questions asked blues. This kid, only19 years old, is an absolute wonder to watch and listen too. Look around the crowd at his shows and jaws are dropped, he is a force on the guitar and has quite an orginal sound. In the summer of 2005 Matt and his band won a contest put on by the Northeast Blues Society, and are competiting in an international Blues competion this January in Memphis.

If you havent heard of him yet, you will soon. Matt and his band will cut a cd some time within the next month that is due out in mid-January. Until then watch out for this hotshot guitarist, he's making his mark on the music scene in Albany and doing it with old school ass blues bitch, peace until next time

What do you Jive to?

Thanks for your input.

Keep listening & Enjoi.

StribeChickS9

Garage-a-trois

New sounds. I'd like to introduce a pretty cool band that hasn't made much headway since they've been around but they are rediculous and deserve to be doing just that. Garage-a-trois originated in New Orleans in 1998, right after Mardi Gras. Amazing jazz musician Charlie Hunter plays the eight string guitar enabling him to play sick base lines at the same time as rhythm or lead guitar. He's got a zany vocabulary and a funky attitude like many that are straight out of New Orleans. Other band members, drummer, Stanton Moore, and percussionist, Mike Dillon (on mallets as well as unpitched percussion instruments) and saxophonist Skerik. Several of their albums appeal to listeners who also enjoy afrobeat, acoustic or jam and bands such as the Flecktones or Medeski, Martin and Wood. Garage-a-trois is upbeat and funky and is quite entertaining as the band uses interesting sound effects and vocal techniques to engage listeners. Check out Garage-a-trois
and perhaps see them live during winter break in Ft. Want something slightly different than the Higher Ground for every show you go to? I know I do. For those of you with wheels and the desire to get out of Burlington/So. Burlington, let me make a few suggestions. Not too far away is the local bar known as the Trackside Tavern in Winooski, Vermont, a cool place to see some good music. Another location a ways away is The Rusty Nail Nightclub in Stowe, Vermont. A couple more cool places are Club Metronome; located above Nectar's bar, The Middle Earth Music Hall in Bradford, Vermont, and the Eclipse Theater in Waitsfield, VT. If you can get out to Johnson, I personally have seen some great shows in a couple of their campus theaters and can vouch that they are worth the drive. Personally, I enjoyed seeing a show in the showcase lounge at the HG much better than those that take place in the larger room. It had a more close-knit feel and provided a great amount of energy. Lotus jammed out a lot more than they do on many of their more electronic CD's such as Nomad. I walked in to hear my favorite song, Livingston Storm being performed, a much different experience than hearing it on a studio version CD, as it had been my first time seeing Lotus live, ever. I had an awesome time and felt that the whole of the audience were on the same page. For those of you who enjoy this type of muzak, I highly recomend going to either/both nights of Sound Tribe Sector 9 coming up on the 19th and 20th of October at Higher Ground. Sts9 are en electronic, trance, jam compilation that will knock your socks off and send you into an entirely different orbit than you've ever been used to...show up, and you'll know what I mean.

Enjoi.

MMMM...I love fall.

Thats right friends it is that time of year again. Break out the Pumpkin and start sharpening you turkey carving knives, oh and while your at it dont forget...THIS IS ONE OF THE HOTTEST TIMES OF THE ENTIRE YEAR FOR LIVE MUSIC! Seriously coming up at higher ground: Dresden Dolls, Matisyahu, two nights of Sound Tribe Sector 9, Yonder Mountain String Band, Leo Kotke and Mike Gordon are just some of the big name, big talent acts coming to HG. But what else is going on around the country? Well as always Brothers Past are touring their ass off skirting Burlington in various locations around the Northeast until Thanksgiving. Those Disco Biscuits just refuse to stop announcing two more shows right before thanks giving at the Borgota Casino in Atlantic City, NJ on November 18th and 19th.
As for other music news Sond Tribe just released a new CD ARTIFACT: Perspectives, featuring remixes of many songs of last years album. Also i recomend the new Kanye West, "Late registration". This CD is excellent much darker and more introspective even then his first album. it features tracks about the death of a grandmother, an ode to Kanye's own mom, and a song warning of the dangers of goldiggers and the diamond mines of Sierra Leone. Dont miss out on this CD.
For other info and stories check this site frequently, and dont forget to use all our sweet links.

Stay up
K-Theory

(pictures from Edward Hopper)

And now, for the unexpected...

New seeds are growing around town! Greyspoke Variety, a highly talented band from Manchester, Vermont has recently relocated to the Burlington area. Originally formed in the fall of 2003, Greyspoke Variety has already created a name for themselves throughout the southern side of Vermont with their fast paced style and fresh sound. Although not big in size, the four members: Rob Eaton on lead guitar and backup vocals, Mike Wheeler lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Jamie Heinz on drums, and Rudy Kiburis on bass guitar and backup vocals manage to create the groove of a big-time band.
Greyspoke Variety is considered a jamband for classification purposes, however, they break beyond the limits to play more jam/rock music. Unlike many of the jam bands out there, their sound is more raspy and their beats are funkier. As musicians, they accredit their developing sound to artists across all spectrums of the music world ranging from Neil Young to Wes Montgomery. However, when all is said and done, the main catalyst in the bands adventure is, of course, the Grateful Dead. Like the Dead, Greyspoke tends to expand their chords during a song into a long and jazzy space jam and then later burst into more restricted chords for a tighter sound.
Greyspoke Variety began by playing covers of the Dead, but in time they grew into covering various sorts. A few that they ever so wisely like to bust out at unexpected times are Phish’s, "Wolfman’s Brother" and "Mike’s Song." Not to mention, Greyspoke also continues the chant of the hauntingly beautiful "Terrapin Station" and the inspirational lyricism of "Eyes of the World." However, more notably Greyspoke has created numerous original songs with a creative twist. Some of their homegrown favorites include Jameson, Driving in the Dark, Waltz on Gibraltar, and Chimney Sweep.
Now that Greyspoke Variety is up here in the heady town of Burlington they are hungry for playing time. They want to play music for you! A few dates and locations are in the works for upcoming shows. Some major gigs may follow in the later months, as well. Future bookings will be announced on FreeHeady. But, you should really visit their website at http://www.purevolume.com/greyspokevariety/music and listen for yourself. While there, sample a few of their songs and check out some pictures. What are the reasons for this? Simple, guitar players are sexy and who doesn't want to be sexy? You know, learn three chords and sing with a monotone/whinny voice. You'll be having lady luck in no time. Now, while many of us are content doing just that, there are others who feel an urge to take their playing to another level.

What do I mean by "another level"? I mean learning how to construct an original sound, and create a guitar solo over various changes and melody lines. This is no easy task for well, anyone. It requires a significant amount of effort and overall, practice. One way to help conquer the almighty guitar is to take what's already been given to you. Think of all the ridiculously talented guitarists out there and all the music they have produced. This tool is so valuable and you dont even need to know how to read music! Tablature, is provided free on thousands of websites and can help you learn your favorite song or, work on something very challenging.

The quality of the Tab is something you have to figure out, with so many options out there, some are bound to be shitty. Since the end of 2003, these boys have been shreddin' it up and down the east coast with their poppy, funkified grooves and energetic stage presence. Led by mastermind frontman Brendan Hall, the band has been on a rampage, doing over 100 club and college shows in their first 18 months and regularly touring in the greater Boston area. On a number of occasions they have ventured north to our lovely town and rocked the socks off crowds at both the Metronome and Nectar's nightclubs. Their killer rhythm section, comprised of Todd Denman (guitar), Scott Sowden (Bass), and my personal friend and high school alum Matt Slowik (Drums) create a cosmic and steady beat, with rhythmic changes that are tighter than a wedgie from the governor of California. Their style is a bouncy and spirited high you shouldn't dare miss. As soon as class was over it was into the car with my friends Zack and Mike and off to Northampton Mass for another night of BP. After the Burlington show i had the pleasure of meeting Tom Mckee keyboardist for BP, and my friends and i begged a couple requests out of him for the Northampton show. It was time to see if they would actually play any of our requests.
The venue was about half full when we arrived one song into BP's set and never got anyomore crowded. This in essence is a real BP show; small, dark, and down and dirty. After hear the end of a set opening Leave the Light on the band went straight into one of my personal favorites, A Wonderful Day. BP finished off the non stop first set with Celebrity(dirty jam)>Inside the Tinman>Too Late Too Call(My request)>Inside the Tinman. But man if BP didnt play the best second set i have seen maybe all year (baring the Biscuits at the Sonar Lounge in Baltimore 2005-05-27).
Right away you knew this set was special with the crowd favorite State Police to open the set. Highlights include, well hell the entire second set was HOT HOT HOT. The boys succesfuly tore up a cover of Radioheads National Anthem, played a down and dirty version of arguably one of their best songs, Lets Start a Gang, and ended the show, sans encore, with a face melting Dead Clowns>Boy. With two awsome shows under my belt for the weekend, the show in Northampton in my opion being a much hotter BP show, sunday brought the promise of Umphree's Mcgee and more good music. By the way as for a review goes id give the show a solid A-

More to come
K-Theory
(all photos from Mike Jones)
P.S. I have heard from friends that their scene is upbeat and true to their roots reggae heritage. But, unfortunately, you know how one thing leads to another and another... and well, I got side-tracked and headed out for drinks instead. As my friend and I wandered by the various watering holes along the way, I could not help but notice the grooves spilling out from the patio of the Red Square. Though, at the time, my perception may have been a bit foggy and my mind keen to distractions, the calling beats were fresh and, like the sirens, they pulled me in.
Aside from the band's tell-tale title, the Patio Kings ruled the square with their funk and willingness to explore bits of space. They played originals as well as a few surprising covers like the catchy Jay-Z tune "Big Pimpin'", which was also covered by Phish on the 2004 Summer Tour. Inspite of the chilly weather, people were rockin' out to the soulful sound of their lyrics acompanied with their creative twist, the saxophone.
Even though my initial plans to see John Brown's Body went up in smoke, I went home an even happier girl after a night spent with the jammin' Patio Kings. I highly reccomend that you check the Patio Kings out. You can sample a bit of what I just babbled on about at their website: http://www.patiokings.com. I will also try to post news about this heady band, as I am able. Not a bad weekend for burlington's music scene. I dropped by Higher Ground for a while and caught some of John Brown's Body, a talented reggae group, full of energy and fun. The following night, Umphree's McGee played in the Higher Ground ballroom, while Morgan Heritage played in its showcase lounge. Both said to have been an awesome time. This Thursday's lookin good with Particle featuring Gaby La La. For those who've got 14 bucks and are into eletronic or jam-rock music, this one won't do you wrong. Particle can cover such a wide assortment of genres, that they become hard to pinpoint, but are tirelessly pleasing. On Friday night, we are priveledged to have the Machine, (An evening of Pink Floyd in the spirit of the groundbreaking animals tour in '77). This show will feature the music of Animals, Wish You Were Here and Darkside of the Moon. On that following Friday, the Machine will play an all request show. More to come. This will be a lengthy post. Sorry.)

So this past weekend was amazing. Aside from the normal weekend being amazing stuff i got to see three awsome shows. My weekend began unofficially on thursday night when The New Deal and Brothers Past came to Higher Ground for a very special full club event featuring two sets from each band. The prospect of this show had me very excited but upon gwetting to the show i realized the only problem, both bands would be playing interlocking sets in both rooms. This meant that in essence you could not see both full sets for both bands. Whatever, I was to excited to care!! This show turned out to be one of the best shows overall that i have seen in a while. Being a very big brothers Past(BP) fan i decided to watch the whole of their two sets while only catching what bits of The New Deal(TND) that i could.
Now as for the show, DANCE PARTY THROW DOWN. I pitty anyone who likes to seriously get down and missed this show. Brothers Past first set was fairly standard, with some excellent energy twoards the end of the set. Moments that stick out are the set closing Big Blue Apples>Getaway Somehow>Big Blue Apples, and the debut of a new Tommy H. song Swimming at Night (it was pretty cool with a sort of Radiohead feel to it). During set break i caught a bit of TND's first set. and GOD DAMN if they werent tearing B-Town a new one. This was honestly some of the most high energy TND i've heard in a while. But then it was back to BP for the second set. BP came out with intent to destroy the mind of anyone in the room, opening the set with an amzing seuge of Bitch & Candy>Lines>Bitches & Candy>Astphadel>Bitches & Candy. This seuge featured one of my personal favorite BP songs, Astphadel, which had an amzing sort of dark jam into it featuring some strange vocal samples. The highlight of the show however was yet to come. BP follwed this huge set opening segment with their songs Everything Must Go>One Rabbit Race>Astphadel to close the set. The jam into One Rabbit Race was INSANE!! Drum and Bass faced paced and aggresive as hell, this is BP.
The end of TND's second set featured BP Guitarist Tom Hamilton ojn an excellent jam. TND finished the show with a body rockin' combonation of old and new, ending the set with the classic Back to the Middle and encoring with their recent albums title track Gone, Gone, Gone. All elements considered this show was very good B/B+.

well thsi post has gone VERY long so i will finish the story of my weekend at another time, probably tommorow morning.
till the Stay up and go see some damn music
K-Theory.
(all photos from Brotherspast.com)

Umphrey's Mcgee

Sunday night was one of the most powerful and awesome nights of music I've seen at Higher Ground in a long time. Umphreys was in town and boy did they make their presence felt. It was my first time seeing Umphreys and I have to say I was impressed. Like many others I had listened to their music on more than one occassion and it did nothing for me, but I like to see a band live before I make any final judgements.

Umphreys is a 6 piece band that features Brendan Bayliss (guitar, vocals), Jake Cinninger (guitar), Joel Cummins (keyboards), Andy Farag (percussion), Kris Myers (drums) and Ryan Stasik on bass. They are a progressive rock band that draws on many different influences to create a truly original sound. Rather than sticking to normal song stucture, they incorporate intense and very flashy compositional sections to just about every song. It becomes almost surreal while watching them switch from section to section with such ease and dead-on accuracy. Guitarists (Bayliss and Cinninger) are of virtuoso status, both getting ample time to show off their talents through the all-mighty guitar solo. Special guests were also all over this show, Burlington's own Dave "the truth" Grippo and trumpet/vocal virtuoso Jennifer Hartswick joined the boys on stage in the first set for a killer "Big Heart" - my personal favorite of the night. The Truth returned to stage in the second set for "Wife Soup." Jen also returned in the second set for a funky "Ain't No Sunshine" written by Bill Wilthers. Guitarist Seth Yacavone also sat in on a few numbers "Thin Air" and a blistering version of Eric Calpton's "Cocaine."

Sick show, no ifs, ands, or buts about it, for everyone who has yet to see Umphrey's..... Good start to the year with the Benevento Russo Duo this weekend, featuring The Low Life, and Drums and Tuba. The Duo tore it up and I really loved Gordon's touch. Some shows worth checking out in the near future are as follows. The New Deal at Higher Ground featuring Brothers Past on 9/8, John Brown's Body on the tenth, Particle on 9/15, and the Pink Floyd cover band, The Machine, on the sixteenth & seventeenth. Next month, I know I'll be at Lotus, Sound Tribe and Capleton, hope I'll be seein' you there. If you feel like venturing outside of Burlington and have the gear to get there, you should check out Little Feat on October 6th, at the Paramount Theater in Rutland, VT. Peace & enjoy.

This Week at Higher Ground

Hey everyone. just wanted to inform ya'll about the great week of music we have coming up at Higher Ground. Not only was the music intense, but Marco and Joe put on quite a stage show, joking back and forth and with the audience. Just when things couldn't have gotten better, out came Mike Gordon with some sick bass grooves. The two-set show closed with a killer encore of 'My Pet Goat'.
